The Early Music Legend

Scope And Content (RAM, or the Royal Academy of Music) A performance-centred archive, largely comprising files of music that relate to concerts given by the Early Music Consort of London (founded and directed by David Munrow) and to their audio recordings. In addition, the archive contains Munrow's scores and arrangements for television and film productions, as well as some radio scripts. Material relating to Munrow, Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (1976), and some correspondence, is also included. Biographical History David John Munrow (1942-1976), an early woodwind instrumentalist, with a particular expertise in the baroque recorder, is best remembered as a pioneering exponent of early music. Philip Pickett was a well-respected musician. However, in After Munrow a radio broadcast he tended to be "over-critical" about the achievements of David Munrow. This re-appears in an interview with him in Goldberg from which brief relevant extracts are presented here.     .....Pickett ofcourse went to the Guildhall School of Music there studying both the modern, and baroque trumpet. However, he also spent time "....moonlighting to the Royal Academy, where David Munrow was giving classes". It was there that he "...was playing with people like Don Smithers in Munrows Early Music Consort." Apparently at the end of his first year at the Guildhall he got severely attacked on the underground, and this became a "big story" that made him well-known.
